CENTER SCHOOL (DISTRICT 11)

This school is thought to have been one of the first schools built in Pleasant Township. But it also was the first one to close.

It was located two miles west of Laketon or close to what was once known as Midway. At one time Midway had a railroad tower, which Luther Brubaker worked at. There may have been a few other buildings close by. There were a few homes we know. The school was a little east of the tower.

There had been three schoolhouses built on the site. The first schoolhouse stood where a Mr. Blade had a garden in 1897-98. Mr. Blade lived in the second schoolhouse which was across the road from where the last one was built. This house was what we knew as the Asa Ireland home. Earl Harveys were among the last family to live in it. It is all gone now as a few years ago it was burned down.

The brick schoolhouse was built in 1884 and Lew Lautzenhiser taught the first term in the new schoolhouse.

As to just when it was sold and who bought it first is not known. But during the time the Erie railroad tracks were being double-tracked, this building was used as their headquarters.

Some time later it was turned into a dwelling and has been that for a number of years.

This building has been remodeled on the inside but it is still in good condition. At the present time it is the home of Mrs. Bernice Ireland.

Some of the teachers who taught in this district are the following:

1843-44  John Whittenberger
