Jay Philip Oppenheim (1925-1994)

North Manchester owner of Oppenheim's Department Store, Jay Philip Oppenheim, 69, died Tuesday, August 23, 1994, 1:34 p.m. at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne. The department store had been a family operation since 1875. He currently resided at Lake Tippecanoe, after living in North Manchester for many years.

Mr. Oppenheim was born Jun 29, 1925 in Fort Wayne to Jean J. and Valerie (Dohner) Oppenheim. He married Patricia Harrison Nov. 29, 1969.

He was a Republican candidate for Congress in 1978. He was a graduate of Notre Dame University, was a Lt.JG in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. He held memberships in the American Legion, Ft. Wayne Masonic Lodge, Ft. Wayne Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne Mizpah Temple, Tippecanoe Lake Country Club, and B.P.O.E. of Warsaw.

He is survived by his wife, and a sister, Barbara Eisenstein of Long Boat Key, FL, seven nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service which will be held at Peabody Retirement Center Chapel, North Manchester, on Friday, August 26, 1994, 3 p.m.

Preferred memorials may be given to Wabash or Kosciusko County charities.
