Max W. Stands (1912-2010)

Max W. Stands, 98, formerly of 105 N. Maple Street, North Manchester, Indiana died at 1:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Timbercrest Healthcare Center in North Manchester, where he had lived the past seven years. He was born June 15, 1912 in North Manchester to Lyman and Daisy (Royer) Stands.

He was a 1930 graduate of Chester High School and attended Manchester College. Max married Marjory Carr on April 29, 1938 at the Lutheran Parsonage in North Manchester; she died September 18, 2003. He first worked for Kreamer Cleaners and retired from Heckman Bindery after 30 years, where he was the purchasing agent. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, and the Deming Masonic Lodge, both of North Manchester. Max played the saxophone and the clarinet in the Tiny Williams Dance Band 45 years and also played in the Manchester Civic Band. He spent summers on Winona Lake in Warsaw 65 years and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by 2 daughters, Jane (David) Grandstaff of North Manchester, and Jean (Fred) Perry of Crown Point, Indiana; 5 Grandchildren, Erin (Steve) Jungbauer of Leesburg, Indiana, Penny (Rick) Ruppert of Rochester, Indiana, Robin (John) Hall of Stedman, North Carolina, Jackie (Matt) Sarkey and Misty (Rich) Massena, both of Hebron, Indiana; 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his grandson Jeff Grandstaff, who died September 1, 1993.

Funeral services will be held at Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East Street on Friday, July 2, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Vern Graham and Deaconess Sabine Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Servia, Indiana. Friends may call 1-3pm Friday at Timbercrest.
