Death of J.S. Mathews

The news has been received here of the death of J.S. Mathews, a former resident of this city, which occurred at the residence of his daughter Mrs. C.L. Gregory at Aledo, Illinois, where they have been making their home for sometime past, on last Thursday, March 15th.

The funeral was held from the Gregory home at two o'clock on Monday afternoon.

No particulars concerning his sickness have been received here but it is supposed that his death was rather sudden and unexpected, as friends here received letters from the family written on March 12, which stated that he was not feeling well but was able to be up and about.

His age was 71 years, 4 months and 27 days.

Mr. Mathews was a man of strong convictions and an uncompromising advocate of what he believed to be right. He was universally respected and had many friends in this community who will regret to learn of his death.
